HISTORY:
After Superman had been abducted by the being known as Cogito, he was subjected to a cortex feed which played out variations of his life. Cogito wished to discover what made Kal-El the heroic Superman. Unable to change history, Cogito could instead control Superman's perception of it. Cogito hoped to accomplish this with Kryptonian experience-implants he had bought from a trader.

Knowing his world was soon to face catastrophe, Jor-El of Krypton planned to save his son from the planet's destruction. Jor-El prepared elaborate computer scenarios to consider possible worlds to safely send Kal-El.

In probability scenario three-one-one Kal-El was sent to OA, HOMEWORLD OF THE most powerful species in the universe. Raised to adulthood by THE GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE Kal-El became the greatest of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS. The crest on his uniform was the insignia of the Corps combined with a Kryptonian symbol, the only reminder of his birthworld.

Though armed with a POWER RING and BATTERY, Kal-El chose to train himself physically, honing those abilities in case the ring was ever rendered useless.

There came the day when the renegade Green Lantern, SINESTRO, returned to the positive matter universe, once again allied with the WEAPONERS OF QWARD. Kal-El was summoned to the CENTRAL POWER BATTERY by a Guardian. Kal-El was confident he could defeat Sinestro but his Oan fathers did not want him to underestimate the villain. They assigned the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 to assist him. HAL JORDAN of Earth had been trained by Sinestro and had faced the renegade Green Lantern time and again, his expertise would be invaluable.

Out in space, Kal-El's super eye sight saw Sinestro's massive warship, crewed by Qwardians. The pair of Green Lanterns correctly surmised Sinestro had brought an antimatter weapon from Qward. The Green Lanterns attacked, Kal-El's powers enabled them to cut through the battleship's yellow hull. The Weaponers used Qwa-bolts to defend Sinestro and allow their leader to launch an antimatter torpedo. Kal-El went after the weapon while Jordan defeated Sinestro with a Weaponer's Qwa-bolt.

Kal-El caught up to the torpedo and tore the warhead from its housing, triggering it. This had been Sinestro's plan all along: to destroy the child of the Guardians as well as half of the positive matter universe. Though Sinestro was correct that nothing in the universe could stop the blast he had forgotten his own yellow power ring, created in the antimatter universe, could contain it. Jordan took Sinestro's yellow power ring and saved Kal-El. Together, their will power was able to contain the antimatter explosion and wait until it burned itself out.

The probability scenario was ended at that point. Though Kal-El would be raised to be a hero, Jor-El did not want to send his son to the Guardians as they were distant and withdrawn as the people of Krypton.

Cogito interrupted the cortex feed at that moment, to allow Kal-El time to recover before the next scenario played out, a scenario involving Kal-El as the hero of Rann.

Cogito played scenarios of Kal-El on Thanagar and finally as a hero on Mars. Cogito's homeworld of X'vyv'x had been conquered by the imperialist forces of the Sole Jurisdiction and was in desperate need of a hero. They had heard of the legendary Kal-El of Krypton who had been raised on Earth and become one of its greatest champions. Since their first contact with off-worlders had been disasterous, the X'vyv'xians were too afraid to ask others for assistance. Cogito staged the abduction of Superman as well as that of the JLA who sought to free their ally. He planned to use Kal-El as the hero for his world until Superman and the JLA ultimately proved they were indeed sincere in their offer to assist Cogito's world, without any ulterior motives.
