HISTORY:
Perhaps one of the most
powerful devices in all of creation, the Philosopher's Stone had
been lost on Earth for four thousand years.
To the New Gods it was known as the worlogog, hourglass
of the gods. A map
of all time and space, the worlogog was a mirror of the
universe, in miniature. A
fraction of the Source revealed itself in the Worlogog and in
some points along the timeline Metron was its keeper. [JLA3 #
15]
In the late 20th
Century, a Colombian drug lord had kept the stone as a
paperweight until agents working for Lexcorp took it by force.
It was studied in Lexcorp's labs and by Lex Luthor
himself who used it to help create the Injustice Gang, his
answer to the perceived threat of the Justice League.
He was also inadvertently warping space-time to create
the conditions that would ultimately grant Darkseid total
control. [JLA3 # 11-15]
Following the defeat of
the Injustice Gang, Superman destroyed the Philosopher's Stone.
This event created a divergent timeline in which
Darkseid's forces were able to invade and conquer Earth.
From fifteen years into this future, Darkseid, Lord of
Apokolips, New Genesis and Earth sent Metron, now broken to
serve his will, back into the past to ensure Darkseid's conquest
would come to pass. [JLA3 # 14]
Seven years after the
Stone's destruction, heroes such as Aztek, Firestorm, Impulse,
Starman, Doctor Fate, Mister Miracle, Robin, Captain Marvel and
Steel were dead. Others
died later, such as J'Onn J'Onnz, the Martian Manhunter. Batman was believed dead, killed around the same time Aztek
died. Earth was
well in the process of being transformed to a hellish version of
Apokolips, with an enormous fire pit occupying most of the
European continent. The
JLA's lunar Watchtower was a "zombie factory" which
erased the minds of humans and gave them only the anti-life. A being of energy, Superman tore open his containment suit
after he was forced to slay Lois Lane, who had been changed into
a mindless zombie by Darkseid's minions.
Kyle Rayner had been
captured, having lost his POWER RING.
Rayner, like others that had not been killed, was taken
to the moon and processed. Rayner was now Swarmtrooper 000830, one of millions who lived
and died in the service of Darkseid. [JLA3 # 13]
Back in the 20th
Century, before the destruction of the Stone, the New God Metron
arrived on the JLA's lunar Watchtower.
Metron claimed Highfather of New Genesis had commanded
him to seek the aid of Earth's heroes to search for the
Philosopher's Stone before it fell into Darkseid's hands.
Using Mother Box, Metron upgraded the JLA teleporters to
generate time-space doorways.
Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Flash would carry modular
Baby Boxes which would home in on Metron's Mother Box's parent
signal. [JLA3 # 11-12]
The three heroes were
sent to different worlds and times in search of the stone but
never finding it. On
one world, Green Lantern met Hourman of the 853rd Century
Justice Legion A. The
diamond-generation intelligent machine colony claimed Rayner had
been betrayed by a false god.
The heroes were
ultimately snared by a bio-radar trawl and taken to Wonderworld,
Headquarters of the Theocracy, Order's last outpost before the
eternal dark. The
heroes of Wonderworld showed them to the Hyperwheel, a machine
once used by the super-fast Glimmer to traverse time and space.
The Flash used the Speed Force to propel himself and his
two friends to speeds beyond that of light, using the Baby Boxes
to home in on Metron's signal.
They believed they were
home and could feel themselves solidifying as they decelerated.
They were pulled towards Earth to see a massive
Apokoliptan fire pit straddling the continent of Europe. [JLA3 #
12]
Fifteen years after the
destruction of the Philosopher's Stone, Kyle merged with his
future self, disrupting the anti-life broadcast through sheer
force of will. He
turned on his fellow swarmtroopers in what was left of
Metropolis. Aquaman
had also merged with his future self and was battling
swarmtroopers alongside the Wonder Woman of this future era.
Aquaman and Wonder Woman were about to defend themselves
once more before Kyle revealed who he was.
They soon found the Flash, merged with his future self as
well, but Wally West was sickly, out of shape and could not
contact the speed force.
The three heroes from
the past had not permanently bonded with their future selves but
they could feel the process finalizing.
They would need to return home before it was too late.
Aquaman gathered the remaining heroes to plan an assault
on Darkseid himself. The
reprogrammed android villain Amazo now served the heroes and
assisted with modifications to Kyle's Swarmtrooper cybernetics.
Wonder Woman, Atom, Green Arrow Connor Hawke, Argent and
Azteka joined in the coming battle.
Kyle was able to bring
them into Desaad's Las Vegas stronghold, using Swarmtrooper
commands. They were
there to steal Apokolips time technology, specifically Metron's
Mobius Chair, and found the Batman instead. [JLA3 # 13]
The Atom, Amazo and
Green Arrow battled parademons in Metropolis while Wonder Woman
fought Darkseid and the Grandmother Box.
Kyle, Wally and Aquaman went after Metron with Batman.
They used Apokolips technology to create a theotropically
engineered fog to confuse the New God.
Batman was able to persuade Metron to temporarily become
human, so that the ever curious Metron would drop his fantastic
powers. As a mere
human, Metron was easily overcome and bent to their will. Batman ordered Metron to return the time displaced heroes
back fifteen years to prevent his reality from ever coming
about.
Amazo was cut down over
the skies of Metropolis and Wonder Woman succumbed to injuries
sustained in battle with the defeated Grandmother Box.
Argent and Azteka had gone to the lunar Zombie Factory to
shut it down. This
would paralyze all of Darkseid's slaves on Earth.
Argent was mortally wounded in the attempt but she lived
long enough for the facility's destruction as Azteka erupted her
armor's four-dimensional battery into three-dimensional space.
Darkseid dispatched
Batman with the Omega Effect.
Though his enemies had hurt him, he believed his will
would still be followed. Three
men still lived to oppose his plans, two stood before him: the
Atom and Green Arrow.
At the Atom's request,
Green Arrow released a flare arrow at Darkseid.
Predictably, the shaft broke when it reached the shield
surrounding Darkseid. The Lord of Apokolips had not counted on the Atom
miniaturizing himself to ride the waves of light through
Darkseid's eyes and into his brain.
Once there, the Atom was able to create a fatal neural
storm to disrupt Darkseid's brain.
Miles from their
location, Orion, son of Darkseid, activated the Genesis Box.
The device was programmed to convert the entire universe
to pure energy and then remake it without Darkseid's taint.
The universe was unmade in an instant.
[JLA3 # 14]
Green Lantern, Aquaman
and the Flash were returned to their proper time period where
Green Lantern immediately alerted the Martian Manhunter.
J'Onn J'Onnz prevented Superman from crushing the
Philosopher's Stone, thereby eliminating the future ruled by
Darkseid. The
Metron from this divergent timeline disappeared once Superman's
actions were prevented and the true Metron was given the
worlogog. [JLA3 # 15]
