Then & Now
This section is devoted to comparison reviews of classic Green Lantern books starring Hal Jordan vs. Ron Marz written Kyle Rayner Stories.  These reviews will compare to like stories.  You be the judge who the better Lantern/writer was....
Green Lantern #147 (2nd) vs. GL #120 (The wounding)
By Empire of Tears

I will start with Green Lantern #147 (2nd) series as the prime example. in order to compare this one issue with a similar story in the Kyle Rayner era one has to go to 2 issues to get the same amount of story that #147 has. This shocked me and to further try to compare the two eras would be so eye-opening the flames may never stop.

The two Kyle Rayner issues to be compared would be #120 {Kyle gets shot issue} and #97 {the Kyle in prison issue}.

Let's begin {SPOILER WARNING}:

Green Lantern #147 (Dec 1981)
Writer: Marv Wolfman
Artist: Joe Staton
Inker : Mike DeCarlo

"...Do Not A Prison Make!"

Breakdown:

Hal is arrested from last issues ending in which he is charged with "breaking and entering" and "property damage" to Goldface's estate.

Hal's cellmate is Black Hand (BH), in costume - it is revealed through the course of this issue that Goldface has replaced most of the prison guards with his henchman.

The readers learns why Hal is without his power ring, BH believes it is because Hal does not want the police to have confiscate it.

BH reveals his power rod and states that even with Hal's ring, it still has a change from last time as the other inmate cells open to release other guys that GL had help send to jail.

The issue then switches to one of many co-plots. Goldface states his overall plans as a new subplot is revealed. Carol tries to get Hal released on bail to not resolution. Hal's ring finds Tom just as his situation is revealed and requests his aid.

Back in the prison, Hal and the freed inmates clash. Hal is barely keeping out of harm's way while detailing that maybe he relies too much on the power ring to have to work harder to compensate without it.

Tom finally arrives at Hal's new home and realizes that he has no way to find the hidden power battery.

As Hal finds himself moving into greater odds against him. BH decides to help prolong GL's plight.

Tom continues to search for the battery and reveals his doubts. "Here I am with the greatest weapon of all time and I can't even begin to use it to help my best friend."

Carl Ferris, in DC fighting on his own to gain the military contracts to restore is near-broke company, only to find himself accused of treason against the US in honoring the military contracts in the past.

Hal runs into a guard, whom shots him in the arm. The bullet grazed his left arm and even with the pain and signs of numbness, GL continues to fight. [[[this is the point in which GL (3rd) #120 will be compared to]]]
Hal turns the corner into the arms of armed inmates, when Tom stubbles upon the invisible battery.

[[[The art panels get a faster pacing, but they still maintain their clean style]]]
One panel, Tom and the battery, while next panel Hal getting stabbed near the gunshot wound. Tom trying to change the ring, while Hal knocks the knifer out of his way. Tom putting the ring on, Hal facing an axe wielding inmate. Tom starting to say the GL oath, Hal's inner strength seems to rekindle as he gets the axe into his own hands.

Hal is hit from behind as the power ring answers it programming that last issue was secretly given to it to fly back to GL fully re-charged.

[[[then the panels return to the regular pacing]]]

The power ring tries to cover the distance to the prison as the inmates circle the fallen GL for the final killing of an lantern.

With ring in hand, Hal quickly imprisons the inmates and destroyed the power rod of a shocked BH.

Hal has won the day, but after hearing out Carol and Tom stories, states "I've taken an oath that no evil shall escape my sight, but if I see through that promise -- then I'm the one that suffers!"

This whole story takes place in about 17 pages with about 105 comic panels and just as many words.

"Target"

Breakdown [[Page references are the pages with art and story]]:

This issue starts with a one panel shot page showing Kyle Rayner getting shot. No description, setup, and a one-word monologue "Aggh!".

Page 2 - Four BIG panels, with nothing but 8 words said by Kyle; again with no scene description or setup [[[okay nothing like this until Page 3 & 7]]]. Panel 1 "I think...", Panel 2 "...I think I've actually been...", Panel 3 "...shot..", and Panel 4 finally GL is on the ground.

Page 3 - 5 big panels with Kyle doodling and thinking about Donna and Jen and how his love life must suck.

Page 4 - a half page panel,, and a two word conversation of "Jeez!" and "Easy." Then two more panels about how Alan scared Kyle.

Page 5 - One third page panel and four others. More conversation about being scared by Alan and then why the original Green Lantern is still wearing his GL costume when he calls himself Sentinel. Then we get a little nugget of story, Alan is here for his Daughter's things. Kyle tries to BS Alan about Jen, but Alan is just here for Jen's things.

Page 6 - More conversation about Kyle's attempts to talk about Jen and Alan is just here for Jen's things.

Page 7 - Alan finally gets to take Jen's things, and mentions that Kyle would have a home with the JSA [[[Sorry, IMO there is NO way that would happen unless everyone died and left Ron Marz writing all the DC books!!]]]
More BIG panels but we finally get those missing word boxes only to find its just Kyle talking to himself about Jen and Alan then its off to Radu's for coffee [[[Wow this is hard work to continue instead of falling asleep, but I am trying to give a fair issue breakdown]]]

Page 8 & 9 - The true story of this issue is hinted at in a few big panel action scenes, with Radu and Kyle shoot at just once. Radu is being stalked.

Page 10 & 11 - In two Big multi-scene panels, the whole history of Radu secret and his stalker is throw at the reader as fast as possible [[[leaving this reader with some more questions never to be answer with this issue.]]]

Page 12 - As Radu continues his conversation with Kyle, Radu turns from coffee shop owner to someone wanting revenge without Kyle's help.

Page 13 - A 2/3 panel with 3 little ones. three word balloons in translated Romanian. Radu and Dracul. The conversation is basically - "Finally you came for me." "Did you think I wouldn't..." "...After you gave me something to remember you by?"

Page 14 & 15 - The meat of the story is revealed - Radu vs. Dracul first with words that Dracul's draws his knife and begins to take the coffer guy down.

Page 16 - Finally, the "big panel" action of the story - Kyle as GL appears and knocks over Dracul whom pulls out a gun and shoots Kyle in the arm.

Page 17 - Continues the "big panel" action as the readers are once again given the first two pages of dialogue and art of this issue while Radu jumps Dracul.

Page 18 - 3 more panels of a bleeding Kyle. Word balloons give that Kyle is trying to talk himself to get up and fight only to almost thinking that Radu is the enemy.

Page 19 - Radu tries to help Kyle with the gunshot wound while Kyle realizes that Radu called him Kyle while he was GL. Radu tells Kyle that he knows and they need to get Kyle help. Radu kind of mentions that Dracul slipped [[[which leaves this reader wondering if Radu tried to save Dracul or not]]].

Page 20 - More of Radu and Kyle trying to get help for each other [[[a couple more useless big panels]]]. As Kyle and Radu sail off, we see that Dracul lies bleeding on his back.

Page 21 - No its Radu, Kyle and Jen?! Let's review here, Alan comes to Kyle for Jen's things and did not reveal where Jen was, yet here is a green skinned and haired woman attending to Kyle's wounds. Radu calls her Donna. Conversation about why didn't Radu, if he knew Kyle was GL, did not take him up on any help. [[[IMO the way Kyle handled this issue, I can see why Radu wanted to go at it alone]]]

Page 22 - [[[My god aren't we done here yet]]] More conversation, this time its still green Donna and Kyle talking about Radu, how good its was to see Donna [[[IMO Hey what about Jen you dirt bag!]]] Kyle goes to sleep.

Green Lantern #147 (2nd) vs. GL #79 (3rd) (The Lock up)
By Sula Feff

Green Lantern (3rd) #79
Writer: Ron Marz
Artist: Darryl Banks
Inker : Romeo Tanghal

"Hard Time"

Page 1 - This issue starts with a five panel shot page showing Radu climbing some stairs with a letter in hand, marked "next day air... urgent". On panel four, Radu is knocking on a door marked "3R" and calling out to Kyle because the package is for him. Last panel shows Radu's face in the light of the opened door, the word bubbles read,"...uh...uh...". End of page one.

Page 2 - Four panels, with Donna answering the door to Kyle's apartment. Basically the dialogue consists of Donna telling Radu that Kyle's not home. Radu gives Donna the package and leaves.

Page 3 - 6 panels that consist of Donna putting the envelope on the table where Kyle's lamp is, yawning and heading back to sleep. The only words on this page are,"ohhh... back to sleep." As she turns her back, a yellow streak of light flashes out of the lantern, then vanishes again.

Page 4 - a one panel page, depicting Kyle flying to the Slabside Maximum Security Penitentiary, which is generally referred to as just the Slab. There are a few caption type boxes here, which I'm presuming are Kyle's thoughts. He's basically describing the local and some of the history of the Slab. He compares it to Arkham, but for guys who can wreck city blocks. Then says it's where all the freaks and psychos and monsters too dangerous to keep anywhere else are kept!? What? Okay, I'm just typing what I'm reading here, but personally I think that description's a little off-key.

Page 5 - a five panel page. This has a priceless conversation between Kyle and warden Dunahy of the Slab. This takes place on the rooftop, Dunahy's standing there with a pair of guards as Kyle lands.
Kyle, "Okay... so who's in charge?"
Dunahy, "I am. And YOU are?"
Kyle, "Green Lantern. The RING's a dead giveaway. Who're you?"
Dunahy, "Dunahy. The warden. Federal brought me in to keep a tight lid on this place. I don't need YOUR presence to do it. My men and I can HANDLE this situation without interference from YOU PEOPLE."
Kyle, "I assume by YOU PEOPLE, you mean heroes like me, but I'll let that one SLIDE. As for your SITUATION, from what I hear you've got an escaped super-powered lunatic named Sonar freeing the REST of the goons in this place and whipping them into a FRENZY."
Kyle, "THAT'S your situation. I'm here to give you a HAND."
Dunahy, "We don't WANT it. We don't NEED it."
Kyle, "Look. I don't know why you're giving me this 'TUDE, and frankly, I don't CARE. I'm offering you help. If I were YOU, I'd take me up on it.

Needless to say, this conversation conveys most of the problems I see in the character of Kyle Rayner and the weaknesses in the definition of that character. Of course this is only just, IMO.

But to continue (and it is an effort):

Page 6 - a six panel page, basically Kyle is trying to convince the warden to let him handle the situation. There's some interesting depth to Kyle's characterization here, let me present to you the dialogue and thoughts that appear on this page. I will italicize Kyle's thoughts to differentiate between the spoken and unspoken word.
Kyle, "I'm the one who BROUGHT sonar here. I took him down in the FIRST place... I can do it AGAIN."
Kyle, "No sense in mentioning I couldn't have done it without FLASH's help. Or that Sonar tore up HALF the upper west side in the process. DETAILS."
Kyle, "You're NEW to the job, Dunahy. You want to look GOOD to the media and your superiors. Now THIS THING blows up in your face. I'M your solution. I'm volunteering to go in. I nab Sonar, YOU take credit for sending me in, and you're a GENIUS. Sonar SPLATTERS me, you disavow me as a loose cannon you didn't invite. Either way, YOU WIN." [[[ God this is bad, if there are any English student here, surely I don't need to point out the glaring flaws from the above. Heck, the second last sentence doesn't even make SENSE!! Who was the editor on this book... let's see... oh well look, it's Kevin Dooley! ]]]
Kyle, "Listen to ME, full of confidence."
Kyle, "So what do you SAY, warden? All I'm looking to do is get Sonar LOCKED DOWN and keep anybody from getting KILLED. For YOU, nothing to lose and everything to gain."
Kyle, "Rather be with DONNA today."
Kyle, "Warden? HELLO? Anybody in there?"
Dunahy, "Fine. We'll try it YOUR way." [[[ My lord! This is ridiculous. What kind of man, warden or not, would put up with that kind of verbal sarcastic crap. No professional I've ever know. Isn't trespassing on a federal prison, grounds for arrest!? Argh, I can't take much more of this and I'm only on page SIX!! ]]]
Kyle, "Attaboy. Just fill me in on the DETAILS... {yawn} ... and I'll go get him."
Dunahy, "BORING you?"
Kyle, "Not at all. Didn't get enough SLEEP. Please... go ahead"

Page 7 - a four panel page. Kyle's enters the prison interior following the warden's directions to where the escaped cons are holding-up. We're also told they don't know HOW Sonar got out. Then we're told in a few words that Sonar's transformed himself, making him better and stronger, by turning his own powers on himself. [[[ Uh-huh, I suppose after it took GL & Flash to defeat him the first time, now we're to believe GL can handle him alone even though he's more powerful than before? ]]]

Page 8 - a four panel page where Kyle is looking at all the freed inmates, Sonar's speaking but cannot yet be seen. We have Shrapnel, Hellgramite, Dervish, Killrock, The Alter and Houngan. [[[ Interestingly enough, there are a pair of thought captions that enable me to envision being applicable to the writer, Ron Marz. ]]]

Kyle, "What, you think I came here without doing my HOMEWORK?"

[[[ Why yes, Ron, yes we do. ]]]

Kyle, "Man, talk about delusions of GRANDEUR, and these guys are eating it up."

[[[ Why yes, Ron, yes they are. ]]]

Page 9 - another four panel page. We finally get to see the transformed Sonar. Another villianess sits at his feet, Spellbinder, or as she's referred to in caption, "the chick". She is "doing the Frazetta thing", as Marz puts it. [[[ Hearing a great painter like Frazetta mentioned in this context, sort of makes me ill. ]]] Of course Kyle believes he can take this group with little problem, but for Sonar, who's a WILD card. he can't just wade in there and GRAB him. He needs some kind of PLAN... Kyle's actually thinking this right before a large blue hand grabs him from behind.

Page 10 - another four panel page. The hand that grabbed Kyle in the last page belongs to Sledge. Kyle's ready to fight, but Sledge tells him to "shhh". Sledge isn't looking for a fight with Kyle, he proclaims he can't stand the loudmouth around the corner, who's obviously intended to be meant as Sonar. He can't STAND the guy. [[[ Just like I can't STAND this issue, it's killing me. ]]]

Page 11 - a six panel page. Here we learn Sledge wants to squash Sonar. He has a PLAN, but he can't tell Kyle because it's secret. Sledge needs Kyle to keep the other villains occupied so that he can get a clear shot at Sonar. This dialogue is priceless, I have to include it.

Sledge, "...I got a PLAN. Gonna SQUASH that Sonar guy. And YOU can help me."

Kyle, " ME? I'm supposed to be the GOOD GUY."

Sledge, " SO? You're here to stop the SONAR GUY, right? We got whatcha call MUTUAL INTERESTS. You help me with my PLAN. Your job is keep them other one's OCCUPIED and stuff, so's I can do my PLAN. It's a DEAL, right?"

Kyle, " Well... shouldn't you tell me the PLAN first?"

Sledge, " Can't do THAT. Then it wouldn't be a SECRET no more. But don't worry. It's a GOOD plan. REALLY."

Kyle, " Okay, sure, WHATEVER."

Sledge, " Okay, PARTNER!"

The last two lines are said as they shake hands.

+ + + + + + + +

So, I'm going to take another break now, because my brain is starting to go soft. Reading this rubbish is pure torture. No wonder I only read this issue once and never looked at it again.

I can't believe Kyle's actually going along with Sledge's PLAN. He doesn't even tell Kyle what the PLAN is and he STILL goes along with the plans of a convicted criminal. Is it just me, or is Kyle/Marz a total dolt!?

Page 12 - a five panel spread. Kyle takes out Shrapnel with one hit of his big ring construct club, he's also sheathed in armor. After the telling the guards to run he turns to face the other cons and says, "... uh-oh."

[[[ Needless to say, there's even more thought captions on this page. Much as before I could quote him word for word, but I will refrain, for nothing less than my own state of mind. It's the usual meaningless tripe, that does nearly nothing to advance the story in any way. ]]]

Page 13 - another five panel spread. In panel one Kyle takes out Hellgramite and the Alter with a double blast of emerald energy. Thought caption reads, "I'm the LAST thing these guys expect..." [[[ Yeah right, a bunch of SUPER VILLAINS would never expect a SUPER HERO to show up to stop them!? Are you kidding me!? ]]] In the second panel Killrock and some unidentified guy with long blond hair are wrapped up in emerald ropes. The caption reads, "... and they're out of PRACTICE..." [[[ Just a thought, but has anyone here been to a prison before? I have. The term PRACTICE is so inappropriate, I don't even know where to start. There is no keeping IN or OUT of practice. This is so moronic. Prisoners are more desperate because of the freedoms they're deprived of. If anything, in a riot situation like this, they'd be even more dangerous than ever. Craving those freedoms I mentioned, more than ever before. ]]] In panel three he takes down Dervish and Hougan with a simultaneous pair of ring enhanced punches. Next two panels have Kyle going after Sonar and Spellbinder, but WAIT. Where's Sledge? Figures Sledge is no where to be seen, who would have thought a convicted felon would do that? So Kyle uses some nifty ring constructed gauntlet blasters to put the two villains "on ice". Of course since Sledge gave him the slip, Kyle presumes the warden will blame him. [[[ How the hell would the warden even know about that!? Is the writer even following his own logic? Oh, I forgot, this is Marz. ]]]

Page 14 - a four panel page. Kyle's gloating over the trapped Sonar, when lo and behold, he breaks free. Or as the caption proclaims, " -- YIKES!". Sonar blasts Kyle. Kyle's shaken up, he's wondering if Sledge is going to show up and save him from Sonar. That was the plan, unless the plan was to let Sonar kill that Green lantern all along. Of course we get the caption, "I'm not too keen on it.". [[[ But I am. Please someone end this for me already. *sigh* ]]]

Page 15 - another four panel spread. Kyle's trying to whip up something to turn Sonar's powers against him. Thought captions read, "I'M the one who needs a plan here. I'm an ARTIST, not an acoustic engineer, but maybe I can whip up something that'll turn Sonar's power back on -- ". Of course Kyle soon learns that Sonar is now one with his power and his attempt at stopping him fails. Sonar has Kyle at his mercy. Last panel has Sonar ranting about stuff and comparing his situation to Napoleon's when he was exiled from France. Meanwhile, a large shadowed figure looms behind him.

Page 16 - one page, one panel. Sledge is smashing Sonar into the floor... BAM. The only words coming from Sledge, "Aw, SHUDDUP!", and Sonar, "AAGH!".

Page 17 - a five panel spread. Sledge hits Sonar again, real hard. So hard infact, that he opens a hole in the floor, where he and Sonar disappear down into. Kyle's looking down the hole, amazed by how deep it goes, when water starts rushing up towards him.

[[[ Man, I'm almost finished... can't wait! ]]]

Page 18 - a five panel spread again. Water rushes in sweeping up the KO'd cons and our hero. Kyle creates a deep sea diving suit for himself, then struggles with a tough choice. Go after Sledge and Sonar, or save the drowning villains? Which will it be?

Page 19 - a final six panel page to end this adventure. [[[ You'll all love the next three pages! ]]] Kyle conversing with warden Dunahy covers the first four panels.

Kyle, "... Not really much of a CHOICE at all. My first duty's to preserve the lives of ANYONE in danger... even THEM. RELAX. Everything went down like we SAID. The riot's over, no guards were hurt, and YOU get to take the credit. You're WELCOME, by the way."

Dunahy, " Hmf. Yeah, okay... good job. But YOU also allowed two dangerous prisoners to escape. I'm not taking the HEAT for that."

Kyle, " Look, warden, I searched the water as soon as everyone ELSE was SAFE. I didn't find a thing. The current probably carried the remains out to DEEP WATER. AS HARD as Sledge hit him, there's probably not enough LEFT of Sonar to fill a thermos. I really doubt he SURVIVED. And as for Sledge, doesn't matter HOW big he is, he can't breathe WATER. The big dope must've DROWNED. I don't think either one of them is ever going to SURFACE again. Now I'd really like to stay here and suck down more of your CIGAR SMOKE... but I'm going HOME."

Of course in the last two panels of this page, while Kyle is saying these last few lines, Sledge pulls himself from the water onto a dock.

[[[ Gods, we're almost done. Now watch how fast the next three pages go by. ]]]

Page 20 - another five panel spread. We see Donna leaving a note for Kyle , which she tapes onto his lantern before exiting the apartment.

Page 21 - a six panel spread. The lantern begins to glow again, as it did briefly in the very beginning. A yellow light bursts forth and a figure begins to take shape in the room. It is all yellow and says, "Finally...". [[[ I say the same... FINALLY only one more page to go. ]]]

Page 22 - one panel one page. It's Doctor Light, his only word, "... FREE."

NEXT: LET THERE BE LIGHT!

+ + + + + + + +

So concludes the summarization of Green Lantern#79(v.3). It DIDN'T come soon enough. The best part of this issue? Other than the fact I don't have to read it EVER again... Dr. Light looks really well drawn and inked, by Banks and Tanghal, on that last page.

Showcase #22 vs. GL #
48 & 50 (The origin)
By Empire of Tears

Looking at the first appearance of each of these two characters: Showcase #22 (Sep/Oct 1959; I will be using the DC Archives version) and Green Lantern #48, 50 & 51 (3rd)

Showcase #22

Writer: John Bromme
Art by: Gil Kane & Joe Giella

[[[Right off the bat this issue has complete Green Lantern stories, so will breakdown each ]]]

"SOS Green Lantern"

Breakdown {as mentioned in Part 1, I will be referring to the art pages vs. the ads}:

Page 1 - One page panel, catches the readers eye is the green flame holding some tiny vehicle. [[Readers of the older lantern series may have thought its must be Alan Scott returning to DC somehow]] The thought bubble tells us that the vehicle is supposedly a pilot trainer, and not met to fly. The rider seems calm and almost thrilled by the event.
There is a text box that introduces the story, this man is Hal Jordan, an ace test pilot and noted for his lack of fear. Today he is to receive "the greatest gift in the Universe".

Page 2 - The reader gets a flashback to what is behind the scene of the first page. Its not Alan Scott, but this pink skinned guy in an interesting green, jet, and white costume. Words and inner dialogue reveal this "alien" named Abin Sur's plight and his mission. He is dying and in need of passing his Battery of Power to someone that is WORTHY on this world. Abin instructs the battery via the ring to seek out any worthy person [[[the funny thing is that Abin directly refers that this person is to be a most likely a male - yes those days it was usually a 'he' ]]]

Page 3 - The readers met the worthy person, and learn that he is a test pilot with Ferris Aircraft Company. The green energy beam had cris-crossed the Earth with the speed of light. After Hal arrives he meets Abin. The readers will note that Abin communicates with Hal using telepathy [[[readers could assume that this is another property of the green energy]]]

Page 4 - Abin tells Hal his plight and when talking about the power battery, Hal notes it looks like a Green Lantern [[[Thus it is Hal that calls it this way]]]. Abin tells Hal it is a Battery of Power and that it is used by "selected space-policemen as a weapon against forces of evil and injustice". Abin continues "It is our duty...when disaster strikes to pass on the Battery of Power...to another who is FEARLESS...and HONEST!". Abin uses a green ring on his hand to "scan" Hal [[[another of the green energy properties then]]] and finds Hal "Yes...by the green beam of my ring...I see that you are honest! And the BATTERY has already selected you as one born without fear! So you pass both tests, Hal Jordan..." [[[Wow, this opens a few questions - if it was the battery that choose Hal and not Abin's ring - why does Abin feel it was his duty to go to hell for choosing Hal? and if the Battery selected Hal, was not the battery an extension of the Guardians on OA?]]]

Page 5 - Abin then reveals how he crashed on Earth and this reveals that "Once you have the BATTERY you will have power over everything -- except what is YELLOW!" Furthermore from Abin the reader learns "The unique METAL which charges the BATTERY with its power has a yellow impurity in it! Strangely enough if the yellow impurity is removed. the BATTERY loses its power!" [[[Whoa! so how does Kyle's battery work then??? Just reading this one issue the reader learns so much and today those same principles have been changed too much IMO with the Kyle Rayner era!]]]

Page 6 - Abin passes over his ring to Hal and the readers learn that there is a 24 hour limit to the ring's charge from the battery.
Abin passes away. Hal Jordan reveals that Abin informed him to disposing of the rocket and Abin's remains. Hal then puts on Abin's "special uniform" and tells the reader about "and I vowed to him that I would carry out my new responsibilities to the best of my ability!" Hal begins some experimentation of his new power and learns that his will influences the ability of the green energy. Hal then takes up his secret identity and calls himself Green Lantern from his first impressions of seeing the battery of power.

[[[At this point the next story takes the reader to Hal Jordan first recorded adventure as Green Lantern]]]

"Secret of the Flaming Spear!"

Breakdown:

Page 1 - The New Green Lantern is shown in the slash page using another ability of the green energy - to pass through a wall. The text box gives the reader the needed introduction to this new story.

Page 2 - The first appearance of Carol Ferris, from this six panels the readers learn that her father owns Ferris Aircraft Company and that Hal has an love interest for Carol. Before they can continue their conversation, this is trouble with the Flaming Spear, a plane that due to the lateness of Hal [[[one would think that this story is placed right after 'SOS Green Lantern', but IMO there was an adventure not told because Hal was not in his flight suit from last story ]]], was given to another pilot.

Page 3 - As Carol wonders where Hal popped off to, Hal gives the readers those very first magical words with one of the most known Green Lantern scenes:

"In brightest day...In blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight!
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power---
Green Lantern's Light!"

The readers learn another ability of the green energy, the gift of free flight, as GL races to save the Flaming Spear!

Page 4 - Another ability of the green energy is revealed, that it can be used to see other energy forces are at work. The Flaming Spear was forced to malfunction! This energy signature leaves a trail under the green energy for GL to follow. The owner of the force beam used to knock out the Flaming Spear is concerned why the plane did not crash.

Page 5 - As the group using the force beam discuss what went wrong GL passes through the wall with brings us one panel to remind the reader what the scene from Page 1 was from. The bullets shoot at GL are destroyed by yet another ability of the green energy to stop the bullets before reaching the ring bearer.

Page 6 - One "villain" throws a yellow lamp at GL and it hits him in the head. Hal reminds himself and the readers about the green energy's weakness to things yellow. The saboteurs have gone for their "getaway" car. As Hal follows, he learns that the car happens to be painted yellow too.

Page 7 - So Hal overcomes this by aiming the green energy to pop the getaway car's tires. After, GL takes the saboteur's to the nearest FBI office, the readers meet Carol's dad whom has some announcement.

Page 8 - The readers learn of Mr. Ferris's apparent 'dislike' of Carol not being a 'son', but since he has business overseas, he might as well give sole charge to Carol while he is away. Hal quickly thinks about his "relationship" with Carol and only to be right when asking Carol out again, he gets the "From now on the relations between us will be strictly business!"

Page 9 - Hal tries to worm his way back into Carol's love life and Carol reveals she needs to prove her father was right to finally show some fate in her and not to get into romance for the two years she will be in charge. Hal gives the readers this story's powerful moment - (sigh) My power ring can do anything for me except get me the one thing in the world I want most -- Carol!"

[[[There is one more story in this first issue of the Hal Jordan era, I will skip this one for now and go to the first GL stories of the Kyle Rayner era.]]]

Page 27: [[[the first 26 pages finally dealt out the destruction of the Hal Jordan era]]] This begins with apparently the same "kid" from GL #48's epic last page. 4 big panels with the only text box being, that the reader needs at least GL #48 to see the first time this saw the green falling up star. Now for the monologue:

"There it is again. Just like the last time I saw it.* Sort of"

"Leave the dance floor to get some fresh air and you never know what's going to happen. Huh. Look's like it's......it's..."

"...coming this way!"

"YAAA!"

Ganthet: "YOU shall have to do."

Unnamed "kid": "UH......RIGHT. I must need some air worse than I thought." [[[Okay this guy is apparently in the air already, right?]]]

Panel 2 -
