WONDERCON '07: DC UNIVERSE: SUPERHEROES GO DVD PANEL

Bruce Timm added that what they’re looking to do with the characters in the films is something like what they’d done in the animated television shows, that is, to distill the most iconic essence of each character into the movie format. Pointing out that with a potential Green Lantern project, the decision would be an easy one – they would use Hal Jordan, given that he was the classic version of the character for years, and has just returned to the forefront of the DC Universe.

DAVID BOREANAZ IN JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER

David Boreanaz is providing the voice of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in Justice League: The New Frontier, the direct-to-DVD animated movie from Warner Bros, The Continuum has learned.

Boreanaz, 37, is currently playing Agent Seeley Booth on the Fox series Bones. He is probably best known as Angel, a role that began in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and extended into its own series on The WB.

Boreanaz was also featured in 2005's The Crow: Wicked Prayer. He next stars opposite Anne Heche in the independent black comedy, Suffering Man's Charity.

We also learned that Brooke Shields will be providing the voice of Carol Ferris in the film, based on the comics series created by Darwyn Cooke.

Shields just last weekend was featured as the voice of the Riddler's girlfriend in Kids' WB!'s The Batman. Shields has dozens of TV and movie credits, including starring in Suddenly Susan and most recently on FX's Nip/Tuck.

According to a representative, Warner Bros. Animation is not currently confirming voice talent for any of the DC direct-to-DVD projects. A panel is scheduled for next week's WonderCon in San Francisco.

GREEN LANTERN CREATOR MARTY NODELL PASSES AWAY AT AGE 91

M
arty was born 11/15/15 in Philadelphia. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and later, Pratt Institute in New York. It was in New York that he began working as a freelance artist, in or around 1938. He soon started freelancing for several comic book companies that either didn’t pay or didn’t pay well. As he later told the story, he got tired of being stiffed by the smaller firms and decided to make an all-out effort to break into the majors. He called at the offices of the biggest publisher, DC Comics, and was told they were full up but that there might be work at an affiliated company, All American. The editor there was Sheldon Mayer.

Mayer gave him a little work. When Nodell asked what it would take to get steady assignments, Mayer, who was looking for a new feature for the company’s signature title, All-American Comics, told him to come up with a character. Nodell returned a few days later with sketches and the germ cell of a strip called Green Lantern. He said the idea had come to him on the subway when he saw a man waving — you guessed it — a green lantern. Nodell also said he wrote and drew the first few pages of the first story…but he wasn’t a writer so Mayer brought in one of comics’ top writers, Bill Finger, to rewrite and finish the first tale. The result was that Green Lantern, by Bill Finger and “Mart Dellon,” debuted in All-American Comics #16, cover dated July of 1940. The character, which drew inspiration from the legend of Aladdin, was an immediate hit on the magnitude of the firm’s other new superstars, The Flash and Wonder Woman, and soon received his own comic.

Nodell later drew Captain America, the Human Torch and Sub-Mariner for Timely, then went into advertising. His wife Carrie passed away in 2004.

GREEN LANTERN FANS GET TREATED TO UPCOMING PROJECTS!

The biggest news at the "DC Big Guns" panel on Sunday at the Toronto Comic Book Expo was Geoff Johns' announcement of his All Star Batgirl comic with artist J.G. Jones, which will begin at the end of next year.

But Johns also announced he would be doing something with Ethan Van Sciver in 2007 that would be a "big Green Lantern-related project that's going to hit around April." Johns joked that he "stole" Van Sciver back for the project, which he said will set up the stories for the next year in the regular Green Lantern series that he writes.

"We've got some more candy for Green Lantern fans," said Van Sciver, who was also on the panel. "We kind of want to do the next level of Rebirth, so that's what we're going to do," Johns said.

Van Sciver: "Superman/Batman #30, which is my last issue on that title before I hop over to working on the Green Lantern project with Geoff. It's Superman, Kilowog, a lot of new Plastic Man stuff. A brand new redesign of Plastic Man. And a super secret thing with Superman."

Johns mentioned that Van Sciver had sketched a redesign of Sinestro on the paper tablecloth at dinner the night before. "I've got it in my back pocket," he said.

In other news, Geoff has stated he is excited to be working with Ethan again:

Yep. And we've been talking about it for the last few weeks. Gearing up for the start of what will send Green Lantern and its mythology into its next phase. Look for the hints of it all to start coming this week in Green Lantern #13.

I'm thrilled that Ethan and I are teaming up once again.

Also, in case anyone was wondering what our arc after WANTED: HAL JORDAN is called...it's MYSTERY OF THE STAR SAPPHIRE! More on that later.

JLU HAL JORDAN GREEN LANTERN FIGURE TO BE MADE- SORT OF

In a secret project by a Mattel Executive this unique figure was created as a "Thank You" to some folks at Warner Brothers Animation, DC Comics and his team at Mattel that has worked so hard on the JLU and DC properties all year. ONLY ONE HUNDRED of these figure were made and each one was signed by JLU co-creator and Producer Bruce Timm.

Yes, fan favorite, and most popular Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan does exist in the JLU line, in special holiday packaging, in impossibly low numbers and unobtainable to most collectors. Hal Jordan made a very brief, unexpected appearance in the episode "The Once and Future Thing Part II: Time Warped" as a result of the time-line unraveling. Many fans will wish that the timeline WAS unraveling and that this figure would have had a wider release. For more info, go [here]

NEAL ADAMS TO RETURN TO GREEN LANTERN?

With Neal Adams, comic artist legend, apparent return to comics with a small stint with Marvel Comics, in an interview, he was asked about his return to some mainstream DC books:

"I'd kind of like to do a Batman thing. I've been talking to DC Comics about a Batman thing for a while," he said. "Or maybe it'll be some Green Lantern/Green Arrow stuff or Green Lantern stuff."

In fact, Adams says he is quietly pursuing a stint on the current Green Lantern series, a title he completed another signature run on in the 1970s.

"I talked to the writer. Maybe we'll do a couple of Green Lantern stories," the artist teased.

ETHAN VAN SCIVER MOVES ON AFTER GL #5, CARLOS PACHECO TO MOVE ON AFTER GL#7

"I'll be moving on after Green Lantern # 5," he continued. "I just found out. [It's] time to go. I'm working under a contract which requires six issues a year for DC. I thought I'd do Rebirth and then another six issues of Green Lantern, but DC decided they needed me somewhere else, instead. Fine with me. I'm here to draw superheroes. Put me in another game. You'll know soon [what my next project is.] I'm sure it won't disappoint."

read more [here] We'll miss ya Ethan, good luck!

Carlos Pacheco’s next (and last, for now) Green Lantern issue (#7) will feature Green Arrow and Mongul. With both Ethan Van Sciver and Pacheco leaving the series, the new artist has yet to be named. (but is someone used to doing epic space battles!)

Clarifying a slight continuity issue, Pacheco explained that Hal Jordan’s Commanding Officer in Green Lantern #3 was supposed to know that Hal was GL because when he was punched by each guy, he realized the ring was the same. Not knowing this in advance, Pacheco drew Hal using the wrong hand on one of those punches, thus making the reveal a little bit different.

GREEN LANTERN PANEL AT COMIC CON DAY 1
care of newsrama

GL #6DC Comics wrapped up a solid Day 1 at Comic-Con International: San Diego with their Green Lantern: In Brightest Day… panel, attended by writers Geoff Johns, Green Lantern Corps: Recharge artist Patrick Gleason and editor Peter Tomasi. San Diego huge programming schedule allows for some very specific (and long) panels, and if you’re a hardcore fan of all things Green Lantern and the Corps, this was the place to be.

Johns handed out DC Direct rings to some fans in the audience and the panel went directly to Q&A from readers…

- Asked if the GL Corps: Recharge limited series (by Gleason and writer Dave Gibbons) will lead into an ongoing Corps series, Tomasi said there’s a good chance if they numbers [sales figures] are good, and they they’re ready to “rock & roll” with a regular series.

- Asked about villains in the regular GL series, Johns said he has plans for new ones, but that he likes the older villains as well. He said artist Ethan Van Sciver has a twisted take on Hector Hammond. Issue #4 features the Shark, who according to Johns is “just beautiful” as Van Sciver draws him. Black Hand and Mongul will appear, and Sonar is coming up in a story, according to Johns, so bizarre, only Van Sciver could be a co-plotter on it.

- Every era of GL villains will appear in Recharge.

- Hal and the GL Corps play a significant role in Infinite Crisis, and there will also be significant changes in the GL book when the books jump ahead “OYL” next spring.

- Regarding how many Green Lanterns there will be in the reformed Corps, it’s over 7200, or 2 per sector.

Johns said they are really treating the Corps as a police force and like any police force officers should have back-ups, which is why they’re going from one GL per sector to two.

John Stewart is Hal’s partner on Earth.

Kilowog’s partner is Salakk, the Corps administrator and keeper of the new Book of Oa. As the administrator, the six-armed Salakk has energy constructs that monitor Oa, and that one of them is always trained on the imprisoned Parallax.

”Besides, we had zero Green Lanterns for so long, let’s do more than what we had before,” Johns said on the subject of the # of GLs. .

- There is no crossover between Space Ghost and the Green Lantern Corps planned.

- Regarding a GL in the JLA, Johns said John Stewart plays a significant role in the JLA after the current arc. He then added, “After that, who knows if the JLA will be around”.

Johns later said both Hal and Guy don’t feel very welcome around the JLA because of Batman.

- Asked how Alan Scott fits into the picture, Tomasi said he will be taking on important duties and Johns hinted there were some important things coming up for him.

- Asked to how other space police organizations react to the reformation of the Corps, L.E.G.I.O.N.’s response will be dealt with in Crisis #1.

- Johns said Dave Gibbons has come up with a new spin on the Guardians for Recharge. Asked later about their methods of operations and what their overall goals are, Johns said that isn’t even known to the Green Lanterns sometimes and they’ll find themselves on missions they don’t understand or necessarily agree with.

- Regarding the subject of new female GL’s – considering the history of killing them off – Johns and Tomasi both said new ones are being created.

- Johns said sector 1417 will demonstrate how the GL's are regarded differently around the universe. In that sector, the GL symbol is roughly equivalent to a swastika, and when someone is appointed a GL, they become a shunned individual.

- Green Lantern #7 will have an appearance by Green Arrow (drawn by Carlos Pacheco).

- Guy Gardner, who has a big role as a GL trainer in Recharge will also play a big role in Crisis.

Asked if Guy will get a shot at payback against Batman (re: their Justice League days), Johns said read Recharge #1.

He also said, “I like Batman, but as history has shown, Batman and GL’s just don’t mix.”

- Asked about how Hal’s past will be handled in the GL monthly, Johns said they might take some liberties with how the past is interpreted and it may not be literal interpretation of what was shown to happen in the past, but that it will be thematically along the same lines.

- In a discussion of the change in the ring’s yellow impurity and how that led to the end of Parallax, Johns said that was Paul Levitz’s idea, the thinking being if they were going to do bring Hal back and get rid of Parallax, he wanted it all tied to GL mythology.

The hint he found was in issue #2 of the old GL series (written by Joey Cavalieri) where Hal releases the yellow impurity from the battery, which ultimately created Parallax, though Johns thought Sinestro was ultimately responsible for that.

- Asked of G’Nort will come back, Johns replied, “You know what … No!”

- Asked why they brought Hal back, Tomasi said he thought GL was good but that the franchise needed to be juiced up a bit, so he went after the books and got them and shortly after starting the ball rolling on getting Hal back, and that Johns was in on it from the beginning.

Johns said brining Hal back was a challenge, since he had to start with the Spectre and a whole lot of baggage, and that he went through draft after draft. “But I like a challenge. I don’t want to do ‘All-Star Green Lantern’, I want to do the regular Green Lantern. If I have to bring him back I’ll bring him back.”

- Tensions between Hal and the characters that remember him as Parallax will continue. Tomasi said they don’t want to sweep that under the rug, that it is part of the character’s past and it will play a role.

- Asked since he’s now revived the Flash Rogues and Hal Jordan if there were any other characters he wanted to revive or bring back, Johns said he’d like to get a chance to write the Batman villains (“though they’re so good right now”), Superman, and he’d also like to try his hand at Suicide Squad.

- Asked if readers will see Ch’p, a “chipmunk”-style GL, Johns said Van Sciver is a “giant fan of rodents”, and can actually make them look cool like he makes Kilowog look cool. A GL from Ch’p’s sector will be seen in issue #4 of GL.

- Johns doesn’t see any teen Green Lanterns in the future, but within the Corps, characters get rings at relatively different ages. One GL may be eons old, another just ten minutes old.

- Regarding why there are so many GL’s on Earth, Johns said the Guardians will mention in Recharge #1 that the GL’s of Earth share a trait that’s unique in the universe.

- On the subject of Hal’s past as the Spectre and whether he’ll have any guilt over that, Johns explained he’s playing it so that Hal has a difficult time remembering his past has the Spectre, so he isn’t dealing with guilt over things he doesn’t remember.

- The GL symbol will be like a badge in the new corps. Trainees will wear just the white circle on their uniform at first and will have to earn the Lantern symbol that goes inside the circle.

Speaking of rookies, though veteran GL’s aren’t affected by yellow anymore, rookies/trainees are. It’s not because of an impurity, but the fear that exists in the trainee’s minds. The more experience they get, the less yellow affects them.

GL costumes overall with remain fairly traditional, with no major revamps. Tomasi said since they’re looking at the Corps as a police force they’ll stay pretty standard. Johns later said there would be variations within the same design. For example, the costume Guy wears in Recharge is symbolic of the Corps Honor Guard.

- Asked the obligatory question as to if there are any plans for a GL movie, Johns said because the series is getting a lot of attention, Warner Bros. is showing interest in GL in other media, but in a straightforward, more serious manner along the lines of the comics (i.e. no Jack Black).

Tomasi added when he started at DC in 1993, there was pitch for a GL that would star Eddie Murphy. Johns also read that script while working in Richard Donner’s office and when he heard there was a GL movie in the works, perhaps with Jack Black, he thought they were probably using the same script.

- Don’t expect the GL monthly to go backwards in terms of supporting characters. Read: no Pie-Face and Carol Ferris will be moving off-stage. There will be new supporting characters but John Stewart, Ollie Queen, Kilowog and the Guardians will play roles.

- Asked if more Golden Age characters will be coming back, perhaps in JSA, Tomasi began to respond then stopped himself, then said a project is in the works by a writer who has worked for DC before and handles characters like that very well, leaving the room with the unconfirmed hint that James Robinson was the writer being mentioned.

- Asked if Sinestro will be forming his own anti-GL Corps squad, both Johns and Tomasi responded in unison, “Could be...”

- There are plans down the line for Major Force, but nothing in the immediate future.

- Johns said Hal’s frequent need to leave the Air Force for GL missions will be dealt with, beginning in GL #3, but not in a way people will expect.

- A fan suggested since the Corps will be treated like a police force, would they see a Corps S.W.A.T. team or hostage negotiation team. Johns said there were no plans but seemed to genuinely warm to the idea, saying he’d like to see a story where a GL hostage negotiation team is sent in to save a planet being held for ransom.

- Asked about the code of the GL Corps, Johns said it depends on the sector. Mostly they’ll imprison wrongdoers. He added that Pacheco is itching to draw a GL from a sector whose methods are to incinerate criminals, but added the rings still cannot kill.

- Johns said Hal will have “many” love interests. “He’s William Shatner, but not a bad actor. And he has good hair.”

- Asked if the Spectre will get a new host, Johns said to read Crisis.

- Finally, asked where he sees the GL books in five years, Johns said hopefully both books are still going strong, and that people can’t believe or don’t remember there was a time without a GL Corps.

GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH GETS DIRECTORS CUT

Wizard Magazine has released (in addition to that what was printed in the currect issue #166), MORE behind the scenes of GL: Rebirth! Here is a snipit:

Green Lantern: Rebirth #1, pg. 10
BUDDY HAL
VAN SCIVER: At this point, Hal is three characters in one, and there are so many sides to him. I named the different versions of Hal I’d draw to represent different sides of him and this one was ‘Buddy Hal.’ This isn’t Hal the superhero, this is the Hal that was our friend, the one we could take to ball games and drink beer with, the one we really missed. This guy is the reason this series needs to happen because we need this guy back.

Green Lantern: Rebirth #1, pg. 11
SEA OF GUILT
VAN SCIVER: In those first two panels, at first we can’t tell who this big bulky guy is under his coast and hat. He could be Mongul for all we know. We reverse the camera angle and we see it’s just some guy, but I wanted to try and put a question mark at the end of literally every panel I could.

JOHNS: Guy is priceless on this page.

VAN SCIVER: I have John all crunched up on panel two because Guy is taking up both of their seats. Again, John is just barely tolerating him.

TOMASI: This page condenses down in one sequence all you really need to know about Hal as The Spectre and what the last few years have been like for him. You could pick this book up having only sporadic knowledge of the characters and key beat moments like this instantly get you inside who they are.

JOHNS: Poor Guy, with his head in his hands, ‘I cheated on my taxes,’ his ultimate confession.

TOMASI: But I guess the insurance on the bar covers it.

Green Lantern Corps Recharge Dave Gibbons Interview

The ultimate purpose of the Guardians will remain a mystery in "Recharge." "The Guardians wishes and the Guardians purpose is something that will be eluded to and eventually discovered although it definitely won't be in the mini-series," Gibbons said.

Guy Gardner may have had a long and checkered history with the Corps, but the Guardians consider him a valuable asset to the new corps. "He's now one of the prime recruits because of his undoubted warrior and leadership potentials," Gibbons stated.

The Green Lantern Corps have not been active for some time and some readers might not even be aware that the name Green Lantern wasn't just a designation for one character, but thousands. Gibbons hopes to change that. "Essentially what we want to do with 'Recharge' is to reintroduce the Green Lantern Corps; reinforce the concept of the thing, revitalize it, make it something very coherent, very understandable to today's readers and also make it complimentary to the Hal Jordan 'Green Lantern' book," Gibbons stated. "So we cover all the favorite areas, all the really interesting and popular areas of the Green Lantern mythos."

So "Recharge" could properly compliment the ongoing Hal Jordan "Green Lantern" book Gibbons worked closely with the book's writer Geoff Johns. "Geoff Johns and I plotted this mini-series together just to make sure everything is coherent and everything across the board has that kind of interplay and that cross bracing," Gibbons said. "Which I think is going to make it work. I had a tremendous time knocking ideas backwards and forwards with Geoff. ETHAN VAN SCIVER TALKS GREEN LANTERN

Ethan Van Sciver, artist of Green Lantern: Rebirth, told The Continuum he will be drawing stories for the monthly Green Lantern book as well, sharing duties with Carlos Pacheco.

Van Sciver said he's been pleased with the success of the Rebirth mini-series.

"Some people said that we were making a mistake bringing back Hal Jordan and that people weren't interested in Hal Jordan," he said. "But this shows everybody loves Hal Jordan. And if they don't yet, they will."

In the first issue featuring Van Sciver's art, Green Lantern #4, Kilowog is a guest-star. The stories involves a strange alien autopsy, a dark conspiracy and Hector Hammond.

"I love Hector Hammond," Van Sciver said. "He's so ugly! I like characters where I don't have to glamorize them. I like drawing scary things, adding little horror elements into super-hero comics."

DARWYN COOKE INTERVIEW AT SILVERBULLET

Check out a cool interview with Darwyn Cooke on his upcoming Green Lantern Secret Files 2005 story [here]

Here is tidbit of it:

NASO: Anything else you’re working on?

COOKE: Also coming up, I've got a 22-page Green Lantern story that I'm drawing for Geoff Johns. It’s a very heartfelt story, that focuses on Hal's love of flight. This is a great project, because it gives Geoff and I a chance to work together on our favorite DC hero. I think the readers will be pleasantly surprised by this story. It could easily be a "lost" chapter of New Frontier or Rebirth.

GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 GOES BACK FOR FOURTH PRINTING!

December 28th, 2004 -

It's the comic so hot it simply refuses to stay on store shelves! Just two weeks after arriving in stores, GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 Third Printing has sold out, setting the stage for an unprecedented fourth printing by DC Comics!

GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 Fourth Printing — written by Geoff Johns with art by Ethan Van Sciver and sporting a recolored version of Van Sciver's cover art from the issue's second printing — is scheduled to arrive in stores on January 5.

"This is just what I wanted for Christmas: a fourth printing of REBIRTH #1," says Van Sciver. "Is this how Jimmy Stewart felt at the end of It's a Wonderful Life? He never got to draw Kilowog, so I've got to believe I'm happier. Thanks to each and every retailer, fan, and especially DC Comics for their continued support of our hard work on this miniseries. And extra special thanks from me to Geoff Johns for writing his heart out on this. The best is yet to come!"

GEOFF JOHNS VIEWS ON GREEN LANTERN IN CSN #910!

Excerpts:

Johns is also piloting Hal Jordan's return -- a return that's long overdue, as far as Johns is concerned. He never felt that Hal Jordan had really settled into his role as The Spectre, "even though I had a hand in it. It was like mixing science and magic. It never felt right, though, did it?"

As Johns sees it, Hal Jordan was destined for heroic greatness. "Hal Jordan was not made into a hero, he was BORN a hero. He's always embraced the thrills of life and adventure, diving into the good fight without fear. Confidence, wit and a rock solid moral foundation were all inherent traits in Hal Jordan before he was even appointed Green Lantern of Sector 2814. The power ring he was given didn't make him a hero, it allowed him to become a hero across the cosmos".

REBIRTH offers Johns the opportunity to reinvent "a great character, an ICON in the DC Universe". And Green Lantern is a concept in general that is about more than just a guy with powers on Earth. It's a science-fiction space-cop adventure series in my mind. A hero that's tied to something majestic and wonderful, and something that goes beyond our limited view. This needs to be epic, and it has to be powerful and important. Everything Green Lantern faces must be a monstrous threat. He doesn't fight guys robbing banks, he battles beings trying to cut the Earth in half.

"The greatest part of the mythology of Green Lantern is the Green Lantern Corps. The fact that there is a massive organization out there that Earth is unaware of patrols the universe. Hal Jordan was the first Earthman ever to be inducted, and that's an element that's been missing from the mythology for a long time."

REBIRTH REVIEW

taken from SimplyJD Online's weekly comic book review column, Simply Reviewed, written by Marc Lombardi:

Green Lantern Rebirth #1 (of 6) -- DC Comics

Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Ethan Van Sciver

There are few things in comic books that got fans more uproarious than when Hal Jordan was made to be a bad guy, turning over the mantle of Green Lantern to Kyle Rayner. From that moment on DC Comics has been trying to right the ship and bring Hal Jordan back to being the man he was for decades, and this story is just the one that will do it for them.

The Story: Geoff Johns' writing is action-packed at times and thoughtful and poignant at others. When a writer tackles the rebuilding of a character from the depths of which Hal Jordan has been sent he has to be extremely careful because there is already so much back story involved. Hal Jordan is not the same character who was given a fantastically powered ring by a blue midget from outer space. First he became the baddie Parallax and he later reemerged as the new version of The Spectre, the spirit of vengeance - not exactly a good guy. Johns recognizes this, mainly by using the voice of Guy Gardner and members of the JLA. The dialogue between Guy Gardner and John Stewart specifically regarding Hal is great, and I love the way that Johns adds humor when Guy questions Stewart on taking orders from Batman. Johns also creates some pretty interesting chaos within the issue that is sure to have ramifications throughout the DCU for a while to come. The last page leads me to believe that the results of this mini may not be what everyone expects, but I suppose that remains to be seen. In the end, this was a great setup issue for what is surely going to be a mini-series that generates a lot of interest and even more discussion among fans, so Johns should be commended for his work.

The Art: Ethan Van Sciver does a brilliant job with this issue. The spaceship sequence in the first few pages is spectacularly drawn and truly otherworldly. His versions of Kyle in costume, Guy Gardner in his Warrior get-up, and members of the JLA are all fantastic. The attention to detail and realistic facial expressions are very impressive. The Black Hand's look in the fourth panel of page 16 (ads not included) is great, as are the renderings of Hal when he first appears and of Gardner when he is in the care of the JLA on page 23. With the number of characters that Van Sciver is blessed with having to draw for this issue alone it shows the variety of designs he is capable of making and skill he has as an artist on a book of this magnitude. His way of keeping Batman in shadow (practically in silhouette) almost every time he is seen gives him an unearthly feel and makes him downright scary-looking. With a cover that is as beautifully done as the art on the inside of the book, the artwork is a great addition to an already well-written tale.

The Simple Truth: Any Green Lantern fan will want to get this issue, as should anyone who maybe doesn't have a lot to buy this week and wants a book with good writing and great art. This well-written, superbly drawn issue means big things are definitely ahead for this storyline. GL and Hal Jordan fans can rejoice over this series as it appears to be worthy of such a beloved character.

Excitement has been steadily growing around GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH, the miniseries a decade in the making that returns the revered Hal Jordan to the role of Green Lantern. GREEN LANTERN'S RETURN

Geoff Johns, writer of Green Lantern: Rebirth and the subsequent ongoing Green Lantern featuring Hal Jordan, said he wants to tell an inspirational tale.

"Green Lantern should be a beacon of hope and inspiration and light in this universe," Johns said. "That's what we want to do. We want to create that magic again. And show how amazing he is with the ring, how much he loves and how much it means to him."

Said Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver: "I'm looking forward to something positive, something that's going to make so many comic-book readers happy, rather than depressed or sad."

Johns said it took him a long time to bring Hal Jordan back as a Green Lantern.

"I spent about eight or nine months, working with Pete (Tomasi) and Dan (Di Dio) and thinking of how we could do this and not do it in a lame-ass way, how we could make it a really good story about heroism and what it means to be a hero and what it means to be without fear and what it means to be a Green Lantern," Johns said.

"It took me about eight months and we finally cracked what the story was going to be. I think it's going to be a really good story and it's going to surprise a lot of people."

Johns is keeping details of the story close to the vest but did say that the Corps will return.

Editor Tomasi addressed the status of the Spectre and Kyle Rayner.

"There's definitely plans for the Spectre down the road," he said. "It's just a matter of where and when.

"Kyle's a Green Lantern and we're going to address a lot of things with him. We love Kyle. He's a very strong character."

JACK BLACK NOT TO BE GREEN LANTERN!

According to this week’s Entertainment Weekly, the rumors of actor Jack Black stepping in as an (admittedly paunchy) Green Lantern, were just that – rumors. “I took a meeting with someone who has the rights, but there’s no [Green Lantern] script,” Black told EW. “I’d be interested if there was a really good writer attached, but it’s far from a [done deal].”

Whew!

BLACK SEES GREEN!?!

source: Aint it Cool News

Jack Black has closed his deal. He will be playing Green Lantern in a film that has been described as a “zany comedy version a la THE MASK.” All rights to the DC comic have been worked out as well, so you can expect to start hearing more about this project in the months ahead.

As I understand it, DC Comics tried desperately to dodge this bullet, but ultimately, they don’t have the right to veto something if Warner Bros. really wants to make it happen. This is the problem with the way DC’s deal with their corporate overlords is structured. Their hands are tied. As much as they are aware of the problem with this approach to the material, they just have to sit back and watch it happen along with fans of the character and the rich mythology that has been established over the long run of the various GREEN LANTERN titles.

I like Jack Black. I really do. I’m dying to see what he does in KING KONG because I trust the director and the rest of the creative team, and I have a feeling they’ll find the right way to harness his energy. But this GREEN LANTERN gives me gas right away. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Maybe they’ll find a way to make it funny without totally trashing everything that’s ever made the title great. And maybe this’ll be exactly as godawful as it sounds. Either way, this one just passed from “rumor” to “confirmed news,” so brace yourselves, comic fans. It’s coming...

GEOFF JOHNS' TOP TEN REASONS FOR HAL TO RETURN!

GREEN LANTERN
Looking to get back into the GL ring? WIZARD makes the case for why Hal Jordan shines bright as the best Green Lantern ever. The wait is finally over. After 10 years of transformations, from the cosmic villain known as the Parallax to merging with the Spectre, Hal Jordan finally returns to the Green Lantern universe in the pages of Green Lantern:Rebirth. The five-issue mini-series from writer Geoff Johns (Teen Titans)and artist Ethan Van Sciver (Flash: Iron Heights)hits in October and, according to johns, will cover every aspect of the Green Lantern mythos. But most importantly, the mini promises to return the luster to silver age classic Hal Jordan, and put the best Green Lantern in his rightful place as one of the pillars of the DC universe. We caught up with Johns to roll out the 10 reasons why Jordan is tops when it comes to wearing the green, white and black.

10. TOP FLIGHT ORIGIN "Hal Jordan has the greatest origin, I think, in most of all of comics," Johns says. "This guy from 'Top Gun' is flying through the sky, and boom, he's summoned to an alien spaceship and told, 'You've been chosen. You're the next member of the Green Lantern Corps. Good luck!' Then the guy dies! It's a fantastic, very compelling origin."

9. COSTUME FOR THE AGES Superman's cape, Batman's cowl, Green Lantern's streamlined flight suit-as worn by Hal Jordan, that sleek, simple costume is an undisputed classic. "It doesn't have to be overcomplicated, and that's the best thing about it," muses Johns. "Whenever you see someone wearing a Green Lantern T-shirt, it always has that classic logo. That's the one ingrained in society, like Superman's 'S'"

8. DANGER'S HIS MIDDLE NAME " Hal is the original 'man without fear,'" Johns claims, and it's tough to argue with him. After all, Jordan's a guy who was breaking records and rules as a test pilot long before the Green Lanterns came calling. As Johns puts it, "He's someone who's always pushing it to the limit, always looking to fly faster and higher, just to see what happens. Hal's the guy who can stand alongside Superman, who can bump shoulders with Batman and not give a sh--."

7. WHAT WOMEN WANT "The best thing about Hal is that whenever he walks in a bar, all the pretty girls look at him," Johns laughs. "He's got the charm and the wit that Indiana Jones has." Ladies of the DCU take note: The line forms to the left.

6. MAN OF ACTION Hal Jordan is one of the few superhero alter egos you wouldn't mind trading places with. "You don't really want to be Bruce Wayne," says Johns. "Even Superman has a lot of weight on his shoulders. But Hal is one of the most fun characters around. You want to hang out with Hal Jordan. You want to be Hal Jordan."

5. MIXED UP SPECTRE The color scheme may have been similar, but lets face it: This former Green Lantern and the supernatural Spectre were two great tastes that tasted blecchh together. Hal's bold, thrill-seeking, takin'-care-of-business personality and sci-fi roots just didn't mesh well with the all-powerful spirit of divine vengeance. As Johns sees it, "The Spectre is a concept that can stand on his own-and so is Hal Jordan."

4. THE WRITE STUFF JSA, Hawkman, Teen Titans: Geoff John's resume reads like a how-to manual when it comes to reviving classic superhero concepts. "The bottom line," says johns, "is that I love these characters. I love taking these characters and saying, 'Look at them-they're cool!' There's a reason they've been around so long, and they'll be around long after we're gone."

3. HAL AND OLLIE REDUX Thanks to Kevin Smith's work on Green Arrow, we've got new adventures of the original Jordan/Queen hard-traveling' heroes team to look forward to if Hal goes green again. "The combination of Green Arrow and Hal is just fantastic-they've got great personalities," gushes Johns. "The difference now would be that Hal isn't the one learning lessons anymore-he's beyond that. He's the one that leads the way."

2. MARKED BY TRAGEDY It's only by seeing how far heroes can fall that we find out how high they can fly, and whether it's through the power of Parallax or the bottom of a bottle, we've seen Hal fall hard. "Hal has flaws," Johns states simply. "We're gonna see some of those flaws exposed and exploited in Rebirth. It's really about picking himself up from the ashes. That's why he's so damned interesting."

1. THE NATURAL Most superheroes-from Bruce Wayne to Peter Parker-can credit a traumatic experience for sending them down the path of the hero. Not so with Hal Jordan. "Hal is a born hero," Johns says unequivocally. "Everyone else learned how to be heroes. Hal wasn't always 'super', but he was always heroic. For some reason, it's sometimes not cool to be a hero. For Hal, it is damn cool. It's okay to be the good guy, and that's what he is. And Rebirth is a reintroduction of why he should be your hero."
